702's name derives from the 702 kHz AM frequency the station had. Despite this station moving to the FM frequency, with the first FM broadcast taking place on 24 July 2006, the AM band broadcasting only came to an end on 28 June 2007.
This station, together with Capital Radio 604 were the only independent sources of broadcast news during the South Africa's apartheid era.
