I was born in the U.S. to Jamaican parents, but my identity has always been complex. When my father left and my stepfather a mix of Adventist and “Heathen” stepped in, I stopped fitting the pop-culture image of a Jamaican. Still, some things never change: oxtail, curry, jerk chicken, and the Patois that slips out when I’m frustrated.
